1 skein remaining. When it's gone, it's gone.
Five one-of-one skeins of Sundara Mahlstadt's Sock base — the round, springy, superwash-merino sock yarn she has been hand-dyeing out of her Madison, Wisconsin studio for nearly two decades. Each colourway here is a single skein with the original hand-written Sundara band intact; once a variant sells, the next time Sundara releases that colourway the dye pool will be different. That's the nature of small-batch hand-painted work, and it's the reason these are priced under current Sundara retail.
This listing is for 1 skein of Sundara Yarn Sock in your choice of 5 colorways: Blue Lagoon, Golden Slate, Honey Bronze, Kaleidoscope, or Rose, Rose, I Love You. Each colourway is one skein only — when a variant sells out it's gone.
Colourways
- Blue Lagoon — Deep tonal navy with cobalt highlights pooling against an almost-black ground — that layer-on-layer hand-painted depth Sundara is known for. Reads as straight inky navy from across the room and breaks into blue on close inspection.
- Golden Slate — Olive-and-gold tonal threaded with veins of slate green and bronze — woodsy, antique, the kind of complex neutral that looks different in daylight than it does in lamplight.
- Honey Bronze — Chestnut brown ground broken by sharp honey-yellow streaks, pulled almost like wood grain. High-contrast and graphic — the strand has visible movement before you even cast on.
- Kaleidoscope — Painted multi — clay-red, moss green, olive, and brown chasing each other along the strand, knitting up confetti-like with no two stitches the same colour.
- Rose, Rose, I Love You — Sun-faded rose-red tonal with warmer brick and softer coral playing through. Saturated, dimensional — a red that isn't speckled and isn't flat.
About the yarn:
Sundara's Sock base is a 3-ply 100% superwash merino, 350 yards in a 100 g skein, finished round and bouncy with the slight worsted-spun sheen that takes hand-paint dyework saturatedly. The base is generous for the weight — 350 yd is enough for a full pair of fingering-weight socks in most patterns (think Cookie A or Hermione's Everyday Socks territory), a deep wide cowl, fingerless mitts in a textured pattern, or a shawlette. Held together two strands at a time it reads as a soft DK with painted-tonal depth running through it, which is one of the reasons knitters reach for a Sundara skein for the contrast half of a colourwork yoke. Gauge sits at 7–9 sts/inch on a US 0–2.5 (2.0–2.75 mm). Hand wash cold, or machine wool cycle delicate; lay flat to dry.

About Sundara Yarn:
Sundara Mahlstadt has been hand-dyeing yarn out of Madison, Wisconsin for nearly two decades. The studio is known for moody, layered colourways — names like In the Still of the Night, Petrichor, Black Roses, New York at Night — and a small set of in-house bases milled to Sundara's own specifications. The Daily Dreams club, Sundara's longest-running subscription, is still releasing in 2026.
Sundara works in small batches: each colourway is hand-mixed and dyed in person, and the colour you receive is the colour that came off Sundara's hands that day. There is no factory between the dyer and the skein, and no two dye days are identical — slight tonal shifts between releases are part of the signature. The tag style on these skeins — hand-written specs on a small white card, colourway lettered on a second card, signature purple ribbon tie on a few — is the classic Sundara presentation that has shipped on her bases for years.
The Sock base is one of the original Sundara bases — a workhorse superwash 3-ply merino chosen specifically because it takes her saturated layered dyework without the colour going flat in the knit fabric. These five skeins came to us from a Sundara collector clearing out shelves; all are in original twist, unwound, with the hand-written band still on.
