A full-bodied cone of Habu Textiles A-1 Tsumugi Silk in Color 14, Brick — the deep cinnamon-rust that Habu’s catalog has carried since their downtown atelier days. Tsumugi (pongee) silk is reeled from short and broken cocoons rather than from a single long filament, so it spins up with a soft matte tooth and tiny dark nubs in the strand — the visual handwriting of real raw silk against the skin. The Japanese mill calls it “wonderfully decadent”; the buyer who knits a single Habu shawl tends to agree.

This listing is for one 9.6-ounce cone, 2,534 yards.

About Habu Textiles. Habu was founded by Takako Ueki and built its reputation on Japanese-mill yarns that nobody else in the West would carry — paper, stainless-steel/wool blends, hand-reeled silks, fine linens spun on antique frames. A-1 Tsumugi Silk is the line that started the silk shelf at every weaver and lace knitter who ever walked into Habu’s 29th Street showroom. It feels nothing like commercial filament silk: it’s drier, deeper, more like beautifully aged linen than satin, and it dyes and over-dyes with a character that no smooth filament can match.

Tsumugi gives your handmade creations interesting texture and interest, and feels wonderfully decadent when worn against the skin — in the way that only natural silk can.
