On the shelf
1 skein of natural browns + grey. When it's gone, it's gone.
Three handspun skeins from a single spinner's stash — two warm browns and a soft natural grey, all spun from named fleeces and hand-tagged with yardage. Sold together as one lot of three skeins.
What's in the lot.
- CVM Brown — 144 yards. A warm chocolate brown, 2-ply, worsted-weight. CVM (California Variegated Mutant) is a naturally-coloured strain of the American Romeldale sheep, line-bred in California in the 1960s by Glen Eidman from "badger-faced" lambs that the white-wool market had been culling. The Livestock Conservancy lists CVM as a heritage conservation breed at risk; small flocks across North America account for most of the world's clip. Fine for a working wool (about 22–25 microns), with a soft hand and a longer staple than most rare-breed fleeces — it spins and knits a great deal like Merino, but with more character.
- Alpaca — 134 yards. A medium natural grey, 2-ply, with the gentle halo and drape that alpaca brings to a handspun. No overdye, no commercial blend — the colour the animal grew.
- CVM/BFL Cross — 317 yards. A finer 2-ply, brown, spun from a CVM × Bluefaced Leicester fleece. BFL (Bluefaced Leicester) is the English longwool prized for lustre and softness; crossed onto a CVM ewe you get the rare-breed colour with a touch of BFL shine and length. The largest skein in the lot.
Specs at a glance.
- Fibres: CVM wool, alpaca, CVM/BFL cross — all undyed, all natural colour
- Construction: 2-ply handspun, worsted weight
- Skeins: 3 — sold as one lot, will not be split
- Total yardage (per-tag): ~595 yards (144 + 134 + 317) (8.5 oz)
- Lot weight: approximately 12 oz total
- Care: Hand wash cool, no agitation; lay flat to dry
Lovely for: a naturals colourwork hat or mitts where the three colours read as a deliberate palette; a striped one-skein cowl worked in alternating bands; or pull the largest CVM/BFL skein for the body of a small accessory and use the two shorter skeins as crown, contrast bands, or a matching pair of cuffs. With ~595 yards of worsted-weight wool across three matched-tone skeins this is enough for a real garment piece, not just an accent.
Condition: excellent. Skeins are clean, intact, and hand-tied; original paper hangtags still on. Stored in the cabinet between intake and listing.
Curator's Cabinet — handspun, named fleece, rare conservation breeds. When this lot is gone there is no second batch behind it.
